Technical Abstract: This book is a collection of thirteen essays that discuss assorted human activities that have affected karst terrains throughout the world. The introductory chapter, by the editor, cleverly ties together the thirteen essays into an intelligent synopsis of human impacts on karst. Paul Williams has done a splendid job of enticing the reader to turn to the other essays to fulfill a need to learn more. The inherent susceptibility of karst soil to erosion and mismanagement was a central theme throughout the essays. A whole set of karst environmental problems result from misuse of soil resources that are thin, droughty, and easily eroded. This book will be of interest to the soil scientist who works with karst soils or works in areas that can impact karst resources. Karst scientists will also benefit from this book because it addresses soil-related issues that are often neglected in the traditional karst literature.
