Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Studies of air quality indicate that agricultural emissions may impact particulate mass concentrations through both primary and secondary processes. Increasing evidence from both laboratory and field work suggests that not only does ammonia produce secondary particulate matter, but some volatile organic compounds may also contribute. Evidence for the impact of gaseous precursors on particulate formation will be presented. Focus from field and laboratory work will be on reduced nitrogen (amine) and reduced sulfur compounds present in air at a swine facility and the product aerosol that they potentially form. Laboratory results suggest rapid formation of secondary aerosol from some nitrogen and sulfur compounds and field results confirm the presence of secondary components of particulate matter very near source.
