Multi-species pheromone-based mating disruption: Moth birth control in cranberries [abstract]. Wisconsin State Cranberry Growers Association. Paper No. SA-9. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Pheromone-based mating disruption is a proven method of pest control, but in cranberries, tailoring this technology to modern production practices has been difficult. Using the wax carrier, SPLAT, we have overcome many of these difficulties and now have three years of data suggesting that mating disruption is a viable tool in the cranberry IPM ‘toolbox.’ The Cranberry Mating Disruption Project has established a pheromone loading protocol and SPLAT deployment system that provides solid evidence of pest suppression. Cranberry fruitworm and black-headed fireworm populations were consistently, significantly reduced in SPLAT-treated cranberries. Next steps: retrofit boom sprayers and scale up. |
