Interpretive Summary: A survey of the insects feeding on native species of the madder or coffee family in Guadeloupe, French West Indies, uncovered three previously unknown gall midges species damaging the leaves of two plant hosts. The three new species are unrelated to one another, so a separate new genus is erected for each of them. The new taxa are described and illustrated and placed in context within the gall midge family. The new characters elucidated here serve as a basis for future work done on gall midges from the Neotropical Region. The construction of a key to genera will make identification of the new taxa possible for scientists and agriculturalists. Technical Abstract: Three new genera of Lasiopteridi (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), Faramitella Gagné, Anapeza Gagné and Pellacara Gagné, each with one new species, are described. The new species are from leaf galls on Rubiaceae collected in Guadeloupe, F.W.I.: Faramitella planicauda Gagné, new species, was reared from Faramea occidentalis (L.) A. Rich.; Anapeza tumida Gagné, new species, and Pellacara postica, new species, were both reared from Psychotria mapourioides DC. The three new genera belong to Lasiopteridi but are unassigned to tribe. A key to the adult stage of these and 23 other Neotropical genera of unplaced Lasiopteridi whose adults are known is provided. |
