International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology. 65:2341. Interpretive Summary: This study identified that a reference sample of an important species of bacteria is no longer available. Therefore, this species cannot be included in any further scientific study. This study recommends finding a suitable replacement or invalidating the species, if no replacement can be found. This work benefits scientists and regulators working with this agriculturally important group of bacteria by removing uncertainty in the taxonomy. Technical Abstract: During a recent study assessing the diversity of the Bacillus lichenifomis group, it became apparent that the type strain of Bacillus aerius was not available from any established culture collection nor from the authors who originally described it. In addition, other authors have reported similar findings when trying to obtain the strain. Therefore, this species cannot be included in any further scientific study. It is then proposed that the Judicial Commission of the International Committee of Systematics of Prokaryotes place the name Bacillus aerius on the list of rejected names, if suitable replacements for type strains are not found or neotype strains are not proposed within two years following the publication of this Request for an Opinion. |
