Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Biodiesel is well-known as a biogenic alternative to conventional diesel fuel derived from petroleum. It is produced from feedstocks such as plant oils consisting largely of triacylglycerols through transesterification with an alcohol such as methanol. The properties of biodiesel are largely competitive with those of petrodiesel. These properties, however, make biodiesel also suitable for other applications such as lubricants and solvents. This chapter presents an overview of biodiesel and its properties in light of these various applications.
