Interpretive Summary: Aphids are significant pests that feed on many of the world’s agriculturally important crops, trees, and ornamental plants. In addition to direct feeding damage, aphids are one of the most important insects in the role of transmission of plant diseases. This research represents the first aphid survey of Valles Caldera National Preserve (VALL) in New Mexico. It greatly expanded the known aphid diversity of VALL as well as that of New Mexico by reporting 50 species. This enhances the scientific knowledge of biodiversity within this unique area. This information will be of interest and importance to range land managers, biodiversity researchers, ecologists, and federal, state, and local agriculture organizations.

Technical Abstract: We report 50 species, belonging to 26 genera of aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae), collected within and near the boundary of the Valles Caldera National Preserve in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico, USA. Of these, 35 (70%) represent new distribution records for New Mexico. Plant genera/species from which the specimens were collected also are listed when available.
