Technical Abstract: Drip irrigation research has been conducted since 1998 at NPRL. Systems include deep subsurface drip irrigation (SSDI), surface drip irrigation (SDI), and shallow subsurface drip irrigation (S3DI). Results have shown that SDI and S3DI are more economical to install than SSDI. SDI systems have more rodent damage, especially in peanut, compared with SSDI and S3DI. Crop yield for cotton and corn are greater for SDI and S3DI compared with SSDI. Peanut yields across systems are comparable. Cotton, corn, and peanut yields irrigated with S3DI have shown increases 3.35, 7.9, and 1.9 times greater than non-irrigated crops, respectively. System installation costs for SDI and S3DI are similar at about $250 to $350/ac while SSDI are much more expensive at over $1500/ac. Costs increase with added electronics for automatic control of valves for irrigation scheduling.
