Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This brief review discusses the main points of the Keynote Lecture to be given at the 3rd International Conference on Microbial Diversity, October 27-29, 2015, Perugia, Italy. Key points include the necessity of molecular identification of microorganisms in order to understand their ecology. DNA-based methods are discussed, included the possibility of using metagenomic analyses to detect and quantify all microorganisms in a particular habitat. An additional point is that by determining the phylogeny of microorganisms, it may be possible to predict their role in a particular habitat.
