Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: BIF Guidelines, more properly titled Uniform Guidelines for Beef Improvement Programs, are a set of suggested approaches to assist member organizations in the development and operation of performance programs for their members. In early versions of the Guidelines these approaches primarily related to measuring and recording of performance data, though ultimately they extended to use of the resulting data primarily in national cattle evaluations. Methodology often changes with new trait development (and challenges in recording data to support new traits), advancements in analysis methodology, and refinement of collection practices. As such updates to the Guidelines are often necessary. Currently, the ninth edition of the Guidelines, published in 2010, is available at http://www.beefimprovement.org. Since this last version of the guidelines, several large initiatives have occurred relating to the development of genomic tools for economically important trait complexes that are difficult to measure. These include measurement of feed intake and gain and collection of data for measuring susceptibility to bovine respiratory disease. As such, the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) board has assigned two committees to revise guidelines for data collection and analyses relative to these two trait complexes.
