Technical Abstract: Long-term climate and water quality monitoring data provide some of the most essential and informative information to the scientific community. These datasets however, are often incomplete and do not have frequent enough sampling to provide full explanations of trends. With the advent of continuous monitoring instrumentation, we can now collect frequent enough data to show whether trends are significant. Furthermore, continuous monitoring provides the ability to assure the quality of the long-term data using statistics. The implications that continuous monitoring data will have on long-term data could have a significant impact on predicting climate and water quality on a much larger regional scale.
