Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: NMR spectroscopy is a major technique for the characterization and analysis of polymers. A large number of methodologies have been developed in both the liquid and the solid state, and the literature has grown considerably (1-5). The field now covers a broad spectrum of activities, including polymer identification, structure determination, polymer morphology, compatibility, chain conformation, dynamics, diffusion, and imaging. In this talk, an overview is given of the use of NMR in polymer studies. Solution NMR remains the workhorse of polymer analyses, and it is used routinely in polymer laboratories worldwide. To maximize the information content of the spectral data, statistical models have been found to be beneficial, and sophisticated models have been developed for many cases of polymerization not easily treated by simple models (6). Multidimensional NMR is now also utilized routinely to assist in spectral assignments and structural studies (7). Solid state NMR is an active area of research where many new techniques are still being developed (1-5). For the purpose of this talk, the use of solid state NMR for identification, morphological, structural and mechanistic studies will be illustrated. Compared to liquid and solid NMR, gaseous NMR has received relatively less attention. An example will be given of the application of 129Xe NMR for polymer studies. References: [1] - H. N. Cheng, T.
