Islandici was reexamined to determine the prevalence of isolates from maize and the built environment. Using phenotypic analysis, DNA sequencing and phylogenetic and concordance analysis we discovered and described ten new species in section Islandici and one new species in section Subinflati. Taxonomic novelties from sect. Islandici: Talaromyces delawarensis, Talaromyces herodensis, Talaromyces juglandicola, Talaromyces kilbournensis, Talaromyces novojersensis, Talaromyces ricevillensis, Talaromyces rogersiae, Talaromyces siglerae, Talaromyces subtropicalis, and Talaromyces tiftonensis, the species from section Subinflata is Talaromyces tzapotlensis. The isolate of T. siglerae is unusual in Talaromyces in that it produced a Paecilomyces anamorphic state. The phylogenetic analysis places it in Talaromyces. Talaromyces rotundus is known from the type isolate but by searching GenBank it is possible to infer that T. rotundus is an endophyte of the lichen Lasallia hispanica because there are numerous records of it as such. Talaromyces wortmannii although common on corn also has a role as an endophyte of the aquatic plant Persicaria amphibia based on ITS sequence records from GenBank. Talaromyces rogersiae and Talaromyces tiftonensis are primarily endophytes of corn. |
