Interpretive Summary: Teste et al. (Reports, 13 January 2017, p. 173) report a trait explaining plant responses to soil bacteria and fungi. Their experimental methods embodied untestable assumptions, and even if these assumptions were met, their analytical assumptions were not. We present (appreciably changed) results of a corrected analysis.

Technical Abstract: Teste et al. (Reports, 13 January 2017, p. 173) report a trait explaining plant responses to soil biota. Their experimental methods embodied untestable assumptions, and even if these assumptions were met, their analytical assumptions were not. We present (appreciably changed) results of a corrected analysis.
