Interpretive Summary: Toxic granular fly baits have been available for many years. Improved attractants ensure that mainly house flies are attracted to these baits. Recently new granular baits with improved toxicants have appeared on the market. One of these is Zyrox Fly Granular Bait (FGB). Reports from the field indicate that Zyrox FGB is attracting and killing stable flies. Proof of concept studies with stable flies in small cages indicated that flies would feed on the bait and die. In further studies in large rooms, stable flies died in 76 hours indicating that they found the small containers of Zyrox FGB and fed, The chemical attractant of Zyrox FGB is unknown, but sugar is included in the bait formulation. Stable flies are attracted to natural sugar sources, and sugar may be the reason that stable flies are attracted to Zyrox FGB.

Technical Abstract: Toxic scatter or granular baits have been available for many years. Improvements in bait chemistry ensure that insects attracted to these baits are exclusively house flies. Recently new granular baits with improved toxicants have appeared on the market, one of these being Zyrox Fly Granular Bait (FGB). There are reports from the field that Zyrox FGB is attracting and killing stable flies. Proof of concept studies with stable flies in small cages indicated that flies would feed on the bait and die. In additional studies in large rooms, stable flies died in 76 hours indicating that they found the small containers of Zyrox FGB and fed, The chemical attractant of Zyrox FGB is unknown, but sugar is included in the bait formulation. Stable flies are attracted to natural sugar sources, and sugar may be the reason that stable flies are attracted to Zyrox FGB.
