Interpretive Summary: The International Committee of the Taxonomy of Viruses oversees the organization and nomenclature of viruses for the entire world. With the ever expanding diversity of viruses, the Nidovirus study groups, researchers that study coronaviruses (e.g. porcine epidemic diarrhea virus) and arteriviruses (e.g. porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus), have revised the organization and naming of all members of the Nidovirus group using a mathematical model developed for viral genome comparison. The arterivirus study group has now organized the viral species into 11 different categories (genera) that should facilitate nomenclature of any newly discovered arteriviruses.

Technical Abstract: The submission to the Executive Committee of the International Committee of the Taxonomy of Viruses proposes the taxonomy be changed to include eleven genera of the arterivirus family, including the alphaarterivirus equine arteritis virus (EAV), the betaarteriviruses porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and rat arteriviruses (RAV), gammaarterivirus lactate dehydrogenase elevating virus (LDV), deltaarterivirus simian hemmorhagic fever virus (SHFV), a distinct african rat arterivirus (ARAV) in a separate genus named lamdaarterivirus, kappaarterivirus wobbly possum disease virus, deltaarterivirus simian hemmorhagic fever virus (SHFV) and the 5 distantly related genuses episonarterivirus, etaarterivirus, etaarterivirus, iotaarterivirus, thetaarterivirus and aetaarterivirus.
