Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Lubricants are used in a wide range of industries and applications including: manufacturing (stamping, grinding, drilling, rolling, etc.,); transportation (e.g., engine oils, gear oils, transmission fluids, greases etc.); mining and construction (e.g., hydraulic fluids); medical and personal care (e.g., synovial fluids for knee and hip joints, cosmetics); food (e.g., food grade lubricants); and textiles (e.g., yarn lubricants). In addition to providing the appropriate friction and wear, the lubricants must also provide a number of critical characteristics that are unique to each application (e.g., the “proper” emulsion stability for a specific metalworking operation). A number of chemicals, collectively known as lubricant additives, are blended in the lubricant formulations in order to provide it with all the required characteristics for the intended application. Most lubricant additives are surfactants of varying structures and properties. In this presentation, the chemistry of surfactants used as additives in lubricant formulations for various applications will be discussed. The relationship between surfactant structure and lubricant property will be analyzed; and recent advances in biobased lubricant additives development will be presented.
