Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The occurrence of sticky cotton in California during the 2016 and 2017 cotton seasons was on the rise. Sticky cotton at the gin can increase the time to process a module of seed cotton from minutes to days. Stickiness at a level which impacts ginning is virtually guaranteed to impact textile processing. The California Cotton Ginners and Growers Association asked ARS researchers to explore simple, low-cost methods to detect stickiness in seed cotton before ginning to help gins make decisions on how best to manage the sticky modules. This presentation summarized current exploratory work to develop a reliable method for cotton gins.
