Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Shot hole borers (Euwallacea fornicatus spp. group; Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) are significant pests of avocado, ornamental trees, other tropical fruit trees, and tea in numerous countries. Lures emitting quercivorol and a-copaene are effective attractants that can be used for surveillance and pest management. Mark-release-recapture experiments and flight mill experiments were used to evaluate E. nr. fornicatus dispersal capability and lure effective sampling range. The combination of the two attractants recaptured significantly more beetles than either attractant alone. Contour analysis indicated that 80% of marked beetles were recaptured within 30-35 m of the release point. Maximum flight distance recorded in the laboratory was 400 m. These data indicate that traps employing both lures together and spaced 30 m apart should aid in both surveillance and management decision making.
