Interpretive Summary: Chiggers are associated to many different urban and agricultural enviroments. These mites are associated to wild and domestic animals and could affect humans. This paper describes a new species of a chigger from Brazil. This information is usefull for people working with acari, domestic and wild animals, quarantine, agriculture and medical fields.

Technical Abstract: A new species of chiggers, Pseudoschoengastia petrolinensis sp. nov. is described and illustrated from specimens discovered parasitizing a white-eared opossum, Dildelphis albiventrisi Lund (Mammalia; Didelphidae), in Balneário de Pedrinhas, Petrolina municipality, Pernambuco state, Brazil. New host and distribution records for Eutrombicula batatas (Linnaeus, 1758), Eutrombicula spipi Brennan and Reed, 1974 and Quadraseta falconensis Goff and Brennan, 1977 are provided. All of the species were collected parasitizing Dildelphis albivestris Lund, 1840, in the Petrolina municipality, State of Pernambuco, Brazil.
