Interpretive Summary: Foodborne Klebsiella pneumoniae is associated with inflammatory bowel disease, sepsis and urinary tract infections. In this study we isolated a K. pneumoniae B8S35 from retail chicken meat. B8S35 is a K. pneumoniae type (ST37) of known clinical importance, contains virulence factors that cause infections in humans, is resistant to five antibiotics, and a sanitizer used by both the food and medical industry. It is a clinical isolate that has made its way into the food supply. We determined the resistance of B8S35 to the food safety intervention technologies ultraviolet light, ionizing radiation, high and pressure processing and found that food could be made safer from K. pneumoniae for consumers using these technologies.

Technical Abstract: Here we report the draft genome sequence of K. pneumoniae strain B8S35 isolated from retail chicken skin. It carries genes for resistance to multiple antibiotics as well as quaternary ammonium compounds used by the food and health care industries.
