They have been used mainly as sources of disease resistance and processing quality genes. However, as farmers face more production challenges, wild relatives will become increasingly important for other traits as well. Because they are found in a wide array of environments, they can be donors of genes for stress tolerance, such as the ability to grow in cold environments or salty soils. They are also likely to be able to contribute to efforts to improve production efficiencies, such as reduced water and nitrogen needs. |
