Interpretive Summary: Description of an execptional subcutaneous burrowing flat mite on a big tree. This association demostrates a new range of habitat in forestry. Important for scientist, forestry, quarantine and agriculture.

Technical Abstract: An amazing subcambium burrowing flat mite, Phytoptipalpus occultuae sp. n., found under the bark and in blisters on stems of Senegalia caffra in Pretoria, South Africa is described and illustrated herein. This is an unique species in the genus Phytoptipalpus because the presence of reduced legs IV, a possible missing link between those with 4 pairs and 3 pairs of legs.
