Technical Abstract: Disposal of chrome-tanned leather waste is a serious concern in the Czech Republic. Interest was expressed in enzymic processes developed by ARS at ERRC in which this waste may be converted into protein products and a recyclable chrome cake. During the past year, bench type experiments were run at ERRC by a visiting Czech scientist who developed equations for mass balance and energy consumption from the data obtained in these experiments. Pilot scale experiments were subsequently carried out at the Czech tannery of Toma. Total costs were calculated and it was found that the economics for running the processes in the Czech Republic were comparable to those calculated for running these processes in the United States. These data show that a profit can be realized from these treatments particularly when high- value protein products are isolated. |
