Interpretive Summary: Rust, gall and bud mites are plant feeding mites of economic importance across the world. We reported a rust mite species from Pennsylvania. This mite species is considered to be specific to the host plant and a possible biocontrol agent. In this study these mites are examined using a table top SEM, which for the first time provides detailed view of all stages of this rust mite species. Research scientists, growers, and USDA-APHIS will use this information for the identification of a potential biocontrol mite species in the U.S.

Technical Abstract: We report Aculops ailanthi Lin, Jin, & Kuang, 1997 (Acari; Trombidiformes; Prostigmata; Eriophyidae) in Pennsylvania and West Virginia, present the first scanning electron micrographs of the species in North America, and briefly discuss an infestation on greenhouse-grown tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle)).
