Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Management of stands is critical for ensuring crop quality. This publication discusses both crop (i.e., seed quality, seed viability, etc.) as well as soil and land management (i.e., seedbed preparation, tillage, etc.) practices to ensure optimal stand establishment. Focus is placed on a wide-range of crops including cereals (corn, wheat, barley), dry beans, sugar beets, onions, potatoes, and alternative crops (quinoa, canola, cover crops) grown in the western United States. Uniform stand establishment is important for all aspects of crop production from efficient use of agricultural inputs, to in-season field management, and, of course, for optimizing yield and quality. Seed quality, land preparation, equipment maintenance are very important for uniform stand establishment.
