Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV), the most economically important virus among eriophyid mite-transmitted members of the family Potyviridae belongs to the genus Tritimovirus. This review presents classification and taxonomy of genera Tritimovirus and Rymovirus. Additionally, the genome structure and gene functions, epidemiology, pathogenicity, disease management, and biotechnological applications of WSMV were presented, as a representative species of Tritimovirus and Rymovirus members. Among disease management strategies, possible areas of future research are identified that would utilize modern biotechnological tools for elucidation of molecular mechanisms governing interaction of viral proteins with host and vector proteins. Technical Abstract: Eriophyid mite-transmitted potyvirid species are placed in the genera Rymovirus and Tritimovirus in the family Potyviridae. The genera Rymovirus and Tritimovirus consists of three and six distinct species with Ryegrass mosaic virus and Wheat streak mosaic virus as the type species, respectively. The rymoviruses are more closely related in sequence homology to members of the genus Potyvirus than eriophyid mite-transmitted tritimoviruses. Among members of Rymovirus and Tritimovirus, gene function, vector transmission, and virus-host interactions have been extensively studied only for WSMV. In this chapter, information on rymo- and tritimovirus taxonomy and classification, virion structure, genome organization and gene functions, life cycle and epidemiology, pathogenicity, diagnosis and disease management, and biotechnological applications are discussed with an emphasis on WSMV. |
