Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In-house research at the USDA is conducted by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS). At ARS, research programs are grouped under four broad categories of National Programs (https://www.ars.usda.gov/research/programs/). Most surfactant related research is conducted under the Non-Food component of National Program 306, Product Quality and New Uses. Surfactant research is focused on two broad categories of surfactants: biosurfactants, which are produced by microorganisms and include sophorolipids and rhamnolipids; and biobased surfactants which are obtained by chemical modification of farm products such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats and vegetable oils. This presentation provides some highlights of surfactant research by the author in collaboration with colleagues throughout ARS.
