Interpretive Summary: Bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) is found throughout the world and it commonly poisons livestock. It can also poison humans and wildlife. Poisoning produces bloody urine, blindness, and neurologic disease known as bracken staggers. This chapter reviews the plant, the various poisoning syndromes that it produces, the current strategies to prevent poisoning, and recommended treatments.

Technical Abstract: Bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum) is found throughout the world and it commonly poisons livestock. It also has the potential to poison humans and wildlife. Poisoning produces enzootic hematuria, bright blindness, and bracken staggers. This chapter reviews the plant, the various poisoning syndromes that it produces, the current strategies to prevent poisoning, and recommended treatments.
