Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This short-course will introduce prospective Bioinformatics students to the Unix command line and give them a brief glimpse at advanced topics in shell scripting. These skills are crucial for Bioinformatics analysis and for modern computational data analysis. The course will be attended by approximately 25 graduate students from major universities across the country, and this lecture will consist of 1/10th of the total session. Students will learn how to navigate in a Unix environment, how to read from plain text files and how to queue up simple shell scripts for submission to high performance computing clusters. In order to facilitate familiarity with the materials, a "lab" of example scripts will be run during the lecture to encourage exploration of the data.
