Citation: Dellape, P., Henry, T.J. 2020. Popondochromus, a replacement name for the Targaremini genus Popondetta Woodward, 1978 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Rhyparochromidae: Rhyparochrominae). Proceedings of the Entomological Society of Washington. 122(4):1005-1006.

Interpretive Summary: In zoology, generic names are unique across all animal groups. Occasionally, a name is inadvertantly proposed that already has been used. When this happens, the junior or newest name proposed becomes a homonym and, according the the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature, must be replaced with a new name. In this note, we propose a new name for a seed bug genus that is preoccupied by a fly genus to eliminate this case of homonymy.

Technical Abstract: In this note we propose the new name Popondochromus for Popondetta Woodward, 1978 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Rhyparochromidae), which is preoccupied by Popondetta Richards, 1973 (Diptera: Sphaeroceridae). The new name will eliminate this case of homonymy and promote nomenclatural stability.
