Interpretive Summary: Insects attacking pecan use a variety of strategies to survive the winter. The three species of foliage feeding aphids overwinter as eggs on bark. The larval stage of the nut attacking hickory shuckworm and pecan nut casebearer overwinter in pecan shucks or in a silken hibernacula on a pecan limb near a dormant bud, respectively. The two-year life cycle of the pecan weevil consist of the larva overwintering in soil the first year and then the resulting adult overwinters in the same soil cell the following winter. Stink bugs overwinter in the adult stage using protected sites underneath tree bark and similar sites. Scale insects, such as the obscure scale, overwinter on limbs where they are found year round.

Technical Abstract: Insects attacking pecan use a variety of strategies to survive the winter. The three species of foliage feeding aphids (black pecan aphid, blackmargined aphid and yellow pecan aphid) overwinter as eggs on bark. The two-year life cycle of the pecan weevil consist of the larva overwintering in soil the first year and then the resulting adult overwinters in the same soil cell the following winter.
