Technical Abstract: In this short note, we found that the genus name for a native darkling beetle, which commonly occurs in both wild and agricultural fields in the United States has been incorrectly used. We identify the correct name that should be applied for this group of common darkling beetles. We also correct the names of non-native species in this genus as well as provide an overview of the taxonomic history of this group. This publication will be useful to individuals identifying native species in both agricultural and wild settings, as well as port inspectors who need to identifiy native and non-native species.
