Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Upland cotton is the most economically important crop on the Texas High Plains. Cotton producers must select the most productive and high quality varieties to improve profitability. The independent evaluation of commercial cultivars provides critical information to producers on the relative performance of varieties in regard to yield and quality. The objective of this work is to discuss the procedures used to evaluate commercial cultivars using replicated field scale tests in the Texas High Plains. Each year, seed companies submit a set of varieties for evaluation and the varieties are planted, grown, and harvested from large scale replicated plots in commercial cotton fields at numerous locations across the area. The harvested material is ginned and the lint provided for fiber and yarn quality testing and analysis. The data are presented through grower meetings, commodity group meetings, and online publications. The goal of this poster presentation is to discuss these procedures with conference attendees from across disciplines to identify areas for improvement and ways the procedures can be enhanced to glean more value for cotton growers.
