Interpretive Summary: Soybean is a versatile oilseed crop and excellent sources of vegetable protein and oil for livestock feed, edible oil, and industrial usages. However, soybean yield can be significantly reduced by diseases. Soybean breeders have been devoting great efforts to developing soybean cultivars with high-yielding performance and broad disease resistance. ‘S16-5503GT’ is a cultivar with high-yield potential, glyphosate tolerance and broad disease resistance. ‘S16-5503GT’ was evaluated in a total of 92 environments in Missouri and 11 other mid-southern states from 2017 to 2021 for yield and other agronomic traits. It is high-yielding and resistant to soybean cyst nematode races 3 and 5 but moderately resistant to race 2. It is also resistant to southern root-knot nematode, reniform nematode, frogeye leaf spot, Phomopsis seed decay, charcoal rot and brown stem rot. It is a salt excluder. S16-5503GT is an excellent variety choice for the growers in mid-southern states.

Technical Abstract: ‘S16-5503GT’ is a maturity group IV late semi-determinate glyphosate-tolerant high-yielding soybean [Glycine max (L) Merr.] cultivar developed and released in 2021 by the University of Missouri – Fisher Delta Research, Extension & Education Center. Southern US growers’ preference for early-maturing cultivars with high-yield potential, glyphosate tolerance and broad disease resistance motivated the development of ‘S16-5503GT’. ‘S16-5503GT’ was evaluated in a total of 92 environments in Missouri and 11 other mid-southern states from 2017 to 2021 for yield and other agronomic traits. ‘S16-5503GT’ yielded 4308 kg ha-1 on average, which was higher than the all-tests mean of 4075 kg ha-1. The seeds of ‘S16-5503GT’ contain 406 (40.6%) and 219 (21.9%) g kg-1 of protein and oil, respectively, on dry seed weight basis. The relative maturity of ‘S16-5503GT’ is 4.8. It has white flowers, tawny pubescence and tan pod walls. Seeds are yellow with intermediate luster and black hila and weigh 14.2.0 g 100-1 seed. ‘S16-5503GT’ is 84 cm tall with good lodging resistance. It is resistant to soybean cyst nematode - races 3 (HG type 5.7) & 5 (HG type 2.5.7) but moderately resistant to race 2 (HG type 1.2.5.7). It is also resistant to southern root-knot nematode, reniform nematode, frogeye leaf spot, Phomopsis seed decay, charcoal rot and brown stem rot. It is a salt excluder. S16-5503GT is an excellent variety choice for the growers in mid-southern states where maturity group IV varieties are widely grown. In addition, growers have option to save seed for next planting in order to save seed cost.
