Interpretive Summary: True potato seed has been generating tremendous excitement in the world of potato breeding. Here we review trends in seed potato production and provide an overview of the seed potato industry. Costs of tuber seed are estimated and compared to costs of seed potato production using true potato seed. Implications for the seed potato industry at near and far timescales are discussed. Initial impacts on seed potato growers seem minor. Over the longer term, there may be a transition to producing the commercial crop from first generation seed potatoes produced from transplants.
