Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In this chapter, we summarize available evidence related to the impact of supplemental vitamin D on risk of falls and fractures in older adults. The goals are to identify the segment of the older adult population most likely to benefit from added vitamin D, to assess the association of a full range of circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels with fall risk, to identify the dose and dose frequency most closely associated with reduced risk of falls and fractures, and to review the impact of vitamin D with and without supplemental calcium on risk of fractures. To address these goals, we draw heavily on evidence from individual randomized, controlled trials and on recent meta-analyses of these trials.
