Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Columnaris disease is the second leading cause of mortality in pond cultured channel catfish and hybrid catfish being second only to enteric septicemia of catfish (ESC) caused by the bacterium Edwardsiella ictaluri. Many species of fish are susceptible to columnaris disease and infection usually follows an episode of environmental stress such as elevated ammonia or nitrite levels in the water. Columnaris bacteria can occur in most, if not all, aquaculture environments. This fact sheet will give a brief overview of the disease and common treatment options.
