DOI: https://doi.org/10.1002/csc2.21042 Interpretive Summary: Bird cherry-oat aphid (BCOA) and greenbug pose persistent threat to wheat production in many wheat growing regions. Currently, no BCOA resistance sources are available for wheat improvement, and greenbug resistance genes are limited. Thus, it is urgent to identify BCOA and greenbug resistance sources in wheat gene pools. A panel of 260 accessions were evaluated for BCOA resistance. Lines exhibiting high and moderate resistance were identified. These lines have potential to enhance BCOA resistance in wheat. The panel was also evaluated for responses to greenbug biotypes C, E, F, G, I, and TX1. A total of 102 lines exhibited resistance to at least one biotype with 14 different resistance profiles or phenotypes, indicating the panel screened conserves abundant genetic variance for greenbug resistance. These lines are resistant to multiple greenbug biotypes and are valuable for developing durable greenbug resistant wheat cultivars. Technical Abstract: Bird cherry-oat aphid (BCOA) and greenbug pose persistent threat to wheat production in many wheat growing regions. Currently, no BCOA resistance sources are available for wheat improvement, and greenbug resistance genes are limited. Thus, it is urgent to identify BCOA and greenbug resistance sources in wheat gene pools. An Ae. tauschii panel of 260 accessions, which account for 48% of the total Ae. tauschii accessions available in global germplasm banks, was evaluated for BCOA resistance. Of these, 3, 12, and 17 lines exhibited high resistance, resistance, and moderate resistance to BCOA infestation, respectively, and these lines have the potential to enhance wheat BCOA resistance. The panel was also evaluated for responses to greenbug biotypes C, E, F, G, I, and TX1. A total of 102 lines exhibited resistance to at least one biotype with 14 different resistance profiles or phenotypes, indicating that Ae. tauschii conserves abundant genetic variance for greenbug resistance. However, the abundance of resistant lines differed in different lineages, with 61.8% in lineage 1 and 18% in lineage 2. Ae. tauschii lines resistant to multiple greenbug biotypes were identified and they are valuable for developing durable greenbug resistant wheat cultivars. |
