Technical Abstract: Sugar beet research for USDA was moved to East Lansing, Michigan in 1923, starting a long term research collaboration. This started with effort in breeding and disease resistance and screening. East Lansing was origninally known for efforts in breeding for resistance to major diseases, such as Cercospora leaf spot and Aphanomyces seedling disease and root rot.
