Interpretive Summary: African swine fever virus (ASFV) causes a devastating disease in swine, called African swine fever (ASF), that is currently spreading across Europe, Asia and recently appeared in the Americas. Sequencing ASFV is a difficult task that has only recently been efficiently accomplished by using new sequencing technologies, here we present for the first time the full genome sequence of the ASFV strain that was causing outbreaks in Mongolia in 2019.

Technical Abstract: On 10 January 2019, the State Central Veterinary Laboratory (SCVL) confirmed the first ASF outbreak in Bulgan province, Mongolia, and the Government of Mongolia notified the OIE about the outbreak on January 15, 2019. Since its first report on 15 January 2019, 11 outbreaks in 7 provinces have been reported, involving 105 farms/households, and more than 3,115 pigs (> 10 % of the total pig population in Mongolia) have died/been destroyed due to the ASF outbreaks. The complete genome sequences of ASFV were reported from several contries, but the complete genome of ASFV from Mongolia has not been published, and the partial genes of the ASFV from 2019 outbreak in Bulgan province, Mongolia were sequenced in previous study. In the present study, we report the first whole genome sequences of an ASFV detected from a backyard pig in Mongolia in February 2019 and its phylogenetic relationship with other genotype II ASFVs identified in Eurasia.
