Interpretive Summary: Leafminers are major insect pests of many important crops in the world such as lettuce. Corky root has been found in major lettuce-producing areas of the world, including North America. Downy mildew is one of the most economically important diseases of cultivated lettuce worldwide. The Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announces the release of two green leaf (USDA-09456 and USDA-09512), a red leaf (USDA-07838), and two romaine (USDA-14489 and USDA-17536) varieties of lettuce. They were developed through conventional plant breeding methods. The varieties have resistance to leafminers, corky root, and/or downy mildew, and are adapted to the major lettuce production areas of the central coast of California. These varieties may be suitable for commercial production, and are suitable for use as sources of resistance to leafminer, corky root and downy mildew. Limited samples of seed are available for distribution to all interested parties for research purposes, including the development and commercialization of new cultivars.
