Opportunities for a circular bioeconomy in rice production. American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. 4. Interpretive Summary: The production of rice generates significant residue material after grain is harvested that could be reused. This study explores alternative uses for some of this residue material, specifically the rice husk. Rice husks were applied to commercial rice fields at rates equivalent to one year or two years of husk quantity collected during harvest. Final results on the impact the amendment had on grain quality, heavy metals, and greenhouse gas emissions were not available. However, the study shows potential for agronomic benefit through the use of this readily available resource and may help transform our bioeconomy toward circularity, but several details must be quantified before widespread adoption begins.
