Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Wheat stripe rust, caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), and barley stripe rust, caused by P. striiformis f. sp. hordei (Psh), are important diseases in the United States. To monitor virulence changes and race compositions of the pathogens, 283 Pst isolates were obtained from 13 states and 53 Psh isolates from California and Washington in 2022. The Pst isolates were tested on 18 Yr single-gene differentials and the Psh isolates on 12 barley cultivar differentials. The virulence frequencies to YrSP, Yr1, Yr24, Yr32, and Yr10 were low (0.4% - 20.9%); those to Yr17, YrTr1, YrYr27, Yr43, Yr7, YrExp2, Yr44, Yr9, Yr6, and Yr8 were high (72.8% - 91.9%); and none of the Pst isolates were virulent to Yr5 and Yr15. A total of 22 Pst races were identified, and the predominant race was PSTv-37 (50.5%) that was distributed throughout the country, followed by PSTv-39 (12.7%), PSTv-36 (7.4%), and PSTv-18 (5.7%), which were restricted in the western United States. From the Psh isolates, 12 races were identified, and the predominant race was PSH-33 (62.5%, virulent on barley cultivars Topper and Abed Binder 12), followed by PSH-46 (10.4%, virulent on Topper, Abed Binder 12, and Trumpf). Except that PSH-33 was detected from both California and Washington, the other races were only detected in Washington. These results are useful in the wheat and barley breeding and stripe rust management.
