Interpretive Summary: Nematodes are microscopic worms that can cause plant diseases. Because some have historically been restricted to certain geographic locations or are newly reported, they can be subject to quarantines and surveys by various countries. The pinewood nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus and its non-european insect carrier are classified as quarantine pests according to the European Union. During the course of a required survey for these organisms, another related species of nematode and its insect carrier were found in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the country of Georgia. Both morphological and molecular data were used to verify these findings. To our knowledge, this represent the first report of this nematode species in both Bosnia and Herzegovina and Georgia. This information will be used by plant pathologists and regulatory officials to prevent the spread of these organisms into new locations.

Technical Abstract: Detection surveys for quarantine pests are one the most effective preventive measures given by the European Union Regulation (EU) 2016/2031 on protective measures against the introduction of non-native plant pathogens. The pinewood nematode Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is a native species of North America, and is classified as quarantine pest in Europe following the European Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/2072. In this study, we report both morphological and molecular data of Bursaphelenchus mucronatus, a close morphological species to Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, found during national surveys associated with the pine sawyer beetle Monochamus galloprovincialis. This nematode was characterized by morphological, morphometric and molecular data. This is the first report of B. mucronatus associated with M. galloprovincialis in both Georgia, Bosnia and Herzegovina territories. This information will be useful to forest plant pathologists, and national forest services for an adequate identification of potential points of establishment of the pinewood nematode in new non-native geographic areas.
