Interpretive Summary: Loss to disease is a major limit to profitability in the US catfish industry. In order to monitor current diseases and potential threats from bacteria in the genus Vibrio, researchers at the USDA, ARS, Warmwater Aquaculture Research Center cooperated with researchers at Mississippi State University, University of Florida, and University of Georgia to identify and sequence the genome of a new species of Vibrio found in the Caribbean spiny lobster. The new species, Vibrio harveyi, was found to contain two circular chromosomes and three plasmids. This genome sequence provides context for other bacteria the Vibrio genus that can infect freshwater fish and will be a useful comparator in the search for virulence factors.

Technical Abstract: Herein, the complete genome sequence is reported for V. harveyi isolate K2014767, isolated from a captive Caribbean spiny lobster (Panulirus argus) inhabiting a public display aquarium. This was the first report of V. harveyi from P. argus.
