Interpretive Summary: Winter grazing can be an economical strategy, but planning is needed to get high quality, available forage at this time of year. An ARS scientist in Raleigh North Carolina described how nitrogen management on fall stockpiled tall fescue may not be as simple as previously thought. Robust, older stands of tall fescue could be harboring readily available nitrogen in the soil beneath it. Accounting for this nitrogen can help minimize costs of winter feed management. Testing for soil biological activity can help make better nitrogen management decisions.
