Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The National Sheep Improvement Program (NSIP) is a genetic evaluation program for the U.S. sheep industry and has been in existence since the late 1980s. Over the years, the NSIP has adapted to producer needs by making relevant changes to its services and underlying analyses. Scientific developments in the NSIP have been overseen by the technical committee, which has recently found new leadership. Going forward, Dr. Tom Murphy (USDA ARS U.S. Meat Animal Research Center) will serve as chair of the technical committee alongside co-chairs Drs. Luiz Brito (Purdue University) and Andrew Hess (University of Nevada-Reno). This article was written for the August 2023 edition of "Sheep Industry News", a monthly publication of the American Sheep Industry Association. The article introduces the NSIP technical committee and reflects upon past successes of the NSIP and future needs/challenges.
