Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This poster is part of the Fifth National Climate Assessment (NCA5) poster series. NCA5 Chapter 28 - Southwest describes how climate change is negatively impacting the vast region’s diverse natural ecosystems, vibrant cultures, and productive economies. These impacts are disproportionately affecting overburdened and frontline communities, as well as Indigenous Peoples. Impacts to overburdened communities are included within each of the five key messages that structure the chapter. Although this chapter focuses on climate impacts, risks, and adaptation actions in the Southwest, it also recognizes efforts underway to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions throughout the region at multiple scales. Governments, nongovernmental organizations, and private enterprises are working to address these impacts through adaptation and mitigation efforts. Since NCA4, our region experienced the first water shortage declaration on the Colorado River, the causes and implications of which are featured in our chapter. The AGU community is invited to explore the Southwest chapter as well as the full NCA5—the preeminent source of climate information for the United States. NCA5 is developed by the U.S. Global Change Research Program and is scheduled for release in late 2023.
