Interpretive Summary: Whitefly-transmitted cucurbit leaf crumple virus (CuLCrV) often occurs in mixed infections with other viruses in plant hosts. Implications of single versus mixed infection, and plant host species, on CuLCrV transmission are not well understood. Experiments were conducted to address these aspects of epidemic development. Higher levels of CuLCrV were found to increase virus accumulation in whiteflies and subsequent transmission to plants.

Technical Abstract: Cucurbit leaf crumple virus (CuLCrV) is one of several whitefly-transmitted viruses infecting vegetables and other crops in the southeastern U.S. CuLCrV can occur in single or mixed infections with other viruses across multiple plant species. Virus acquisition by whitefly from such single and mixed infections, and subsequent transmission to other plants, are not well understood. This study demonstrated that whitefly transmission of CuLCrV between hosts plants is dependent on virus accumulation with implications for epidemics.
